Chapter 4: Dastan-e Nabard-e Fereydun va Zahhak (The Story of the Battle of Fereydun and Zahhak)

فریدون دو برادر داشت و هر دوی آنها از او بزرگتر هستند. نامشان کتایون و برمایه. فریدون و برادران او به بازار آهنگران تاختند و فرمود گرز گرانی. آهنگران به جهانجوی دادند گرز سر کاومیش گرانی و او آماده بود که کلاه مهی به سرش برگرد به زودی.

با گرز و لشکر به کاخ ضحاک می رفت و به جای معبدی رسید. آنجا سپاه‌اش انجمن شد. نیم شب یک زن حوری با شکل زیبارو جلوی برادران آمد. آن زن برادران مهتر را افسون کرد اما فریدون می دانست که این یک کار خداوند بود و زن از دست اهریمن نیامد. به دلیل جادوی آن زن برادران مهتر به کوه بلندی دویدند. آنجا، سنگ کندند و به زمین انداختند که بر سر فریدون بیفتند. کتایون و برمایه برادرشان را مرده پنداشتند اما فره ایزدی فریدون را حفاظت کرد و سنگ‌ها در هوا خشک شدند. فریدون به برادرانش هیچ‌چی نگفت حتی پس از این که اثر طلسم زن حوری تمام شد.

لشکرش به رود اروند رسید و آنجا فریدون کاخ پادشاه‌ی اژدها پیکر را در بیت المقدس دید. کاخ او عظیم بود - ایوانش همه‌ی ستاره‌ها را می‌پسود. کاخ با طلسمی حفاظت می‌شد و فریدون، به نام خداوند، به او حمله کرد و طلسم را شکست. همه‌ی نگهبانان ضحاک شکست خوردند و فرزند آبتین کاخ پادشاه‌ی اژدها پیکر را تصرف کرد. همسران ضحاک از شبستان بیرون آمدند و دیدند که کسی کاخشان را تصرف کرده‌بود. وقتی که فریدون را دیدند، ارنواز به او گفت که تو ایی که فریب جادویی را ویران کنی و فریدون سوگند خورد که او سر ضحاک را به گاز خواهد آورد.

ضحاک به هندوستان تاخته‌بود و آنجا هزار هزار آدم می‌کشتد. فکر می‌کرد که اگر خود را با خون قربانیانش بشوید پیشگویی اخترشناسان اتفاق نخواهد افتاد. پادشاه‌ی اژدها پیکر پادشاه‌ی ترسیده شده‌بود. آن دو مار سیاهی که روی شانه‌هایش بودند به جسمش آزاری آوردند. پادشاه نه تنها آرام و قرارش از دست داد‌بود اما یواش یواش دیوانه هم می‌شد.

ضحاک در کاخش پیشکاری وفادار داشت که نامش کندرو بود. وارد در دربار اربابش شد و بر تخت جهان نشست. اعلام کرد که من پادشاه جدید هستم. اما کندرو هنوز وفادار بود و وقتی که فرصت داشت به سوی ضحاک تاخت. کندرو به حاکمش کفت که نشان آمده‌است که تو باید برگردی چون سه نفر در سر لشکر عظیم به کاخ آمد‌ه‌بودند. پادشاه اژدهاپیکر فکر کرد که شاید اینها مهمان باشند و خدمتکارش جواب داد که تو که هرگز مهمان شناس نبودی چرا اکنون که کسی را که با گرز او به کاخ خودت آمد به این شکل می‌بینی. پاسخ پادشاه بود که مهمان گستاخ هم بهتر به فال است. کندرو پرسید که مهمانی چه کاری دارد در شبستان پادشاه با همسران او. پس از شنیدن این ضحاک در عصبانیت فریاد زد که هرگز تو در خانه‌ی من نباشی نگهبان من و کندرو را اخراج کرد. خدمتکار وفادار به اربابش گفت که تو دیگر پادشاه نیستی - تو فقط هوا هستی. ضحاک برگشت به کشور خودش و آمد با سپاه گران به دیوان جنگاوران.

بین سپاه ضحاک و سپاه فریدون فرقی بود که سپاه فریدون پایگاه مردمی داشت و همه از درد ضحاک پرخون بودند. آن پیران که در جنگ دانا بودند سوی لشکر فریدون شدند از نزدیک ضحاک بیرون شدند. از رشک ضحاک از سپاه خود جدا شد و به کاخ رفت. زره بزرگ پوشید. نه از تخت یاد، نا از جان فرود آمد از بام کاخ. به خون پریچهره‌گان تشنه بود.

از بالا آمد فریدون و با گرزه گاوسر ضحاک را زد بر سر او. از آسمان آمد سروش و گفت که این را نکش چون وقت مرگش هنوز نرسید. فریدون به سربازانش اعلام کرد که کارمان تمام شد و به ایشان فرمان داد که برگردید به زندگی شما. فریدون ضحاک را به جایی که اسمش شیرخان بود برد. هر کس می‌خواست پادشاه اژدهاپیکر را بکشد اما سروش دوباره از آسمان فرود آمد و گفت که فریدون باید ضحاک را در دماوند ببرد. ضحاک را با زنجیر در دماوند بست فریدون و خون او بر زمین ریخت.

Translation

Fereydun had two brothers and both were older than him. Their names were Katayun and Barmaye. Fereydun and his brothers gallopped to the blacksmiths’ market and commanded a costly and precious mace. The blacksmiths presented the world seeker with a costly mace made of a buffalo’s head and he was ready that the Crown of Greatness return to him quickly.

With mace and army he went towards Zahhak’s palace and arrived at a place of temples. There, his army gathered. At midnight a Huri with a face of beauty appeared before the brothers. That woman charmed the elder brothers but Fereydun knew that this was an act of God and that the woman did not come from the hand of Ahriman. Because of that woman’s magic, the elder brothers ran towards a tall mountain. There, they dug up rocks and dropped them to the earth that they fall on Fereydun’s head. Ketayun and Barmaye imagined their brother dead but the Farr-e Yazidi protected Fereydun and the rocks shriveled in the air. Even after the effect of the Huri’s spell had passed, Fereydun did not say anything about this to his brothers.

His army arrived at the Arvand river and there Fereydun saw the palace of the Dragon King in the Bayt-ul Muqqadas. The palace was magnificent with verandas that touched all of the stars. The palace was protected by a spell but Fereydun, in the name of God, attacked it and broke the spell. All of Zahhak’s guardians were defeated and the heir of Abtin captured the palace of the Dragon King. Zahhak’s wives came out of the bedroom and saw that someone had conquered their palace. When they saw Fereydun, Arnavaz said that it was he who would destroy the deception of magical trickery and he promised to sever Zahhak’s head.

Zahhak had gone to India and there killed thousands and thousands of men. He thought that if he bathed in the blood of his victims that the prophecy of the stargazers would not come to pass. The Dragon King had become the fearful king. The two black serpents on his shoulders harassed him and not only had the pâdishâh lost his equanimity but he also gradually became crazed.

Zahhak possessed a loyal servant in his palace named Kondrow. Kondrow entered his master’s court and sat on the throne of the world. He declared that I am now the new pâdishâh. But Kondrow was still loyal and when he had the opportunity, he rushed towards Zahhak. Kondrow told his mater that a sign has come that you must return because three men at the head of a grand army had come to the palace. The Dragon King thought that maybe these were guests and his servant answered that you who have never been hospitable to guests why are you looking at someone who has come to your own palace with his mace in this manner. The pâdishâh responded that a rude guest is also a good omen. Kondrow asked what business does a guest have in the bedroom of the pâdishâh with his wives. After hearing this, in his anger Zahhak shouted at Kondrow that may you never be a guardian in my house again and expelled him from his court. The loyal servant said to his master that you are not the pâdishâh anymore, you are only air. Zahhak returned in haste to his own country and came with a great army to the Court of Warriors.

There was a difference between Zahhak’s army and Fereydun’s army that Fereydun’s army had a foundation of men and all of them were replete with the agony of Zahhak. Those elders who were wise in matters of war joined Fereydun and left Zahhak. From jealousy Zahhak separated himself from his army and went to his palace. He put on a grand set of armour. Remembering neither his throne nor his life, he came down from the roof of the palace, thirsty for the blood of the angel-faced ones.

From above came Fereydun and with his cow-headed sceptre he hit Zahhak on his head. From the sky came Soroush and told Fereydun not to kill him for now was not his time to die. Fereydun declared to his soldiers that our work is finished and ordered them to return to their lives. He then carried Zahhak to a place named Shir Khan. Everyone wanted to kill the Dragon King but Soroush again came down from the skies and said that he had to carry Zahhak to Damâvand. Fereydun imprisoned Zahhak with chains in Damâvand, who shed his blood on the floor.
