Chapter 5: Dastan-e Pâdishâhi-ye Fereydun (The Story of the Reign of Fereydun)

فریدون نشست بر تخت مهی و پادشاهی او پانصد سال طول کشید. مادرش فرانک اگاه نبود که فرزندش بادشاه جهان شده‌بود، سرانجام سر آمدند روزگار جادو‌ی بدی. فریدون از نژاد پیشدادی بود اما پادشاه همه‌ی جهان از چین تا روم بود.

وقتی که پنجاه ساله شد سه پسر داشت، دو از شهرناز و یکی کوچک‌تر از ارنواز. به فرزندانش نام نداده‌بود و روزی به خدمتکارش جندل فرمان داد که برای پسران من بیاب سه خواهر از مادر و پدر پریچهره و خسرو گوهر. علاوه بر این شرط دیگری داشت که این دختران هنوز نام نداشته‌باشند. جندل از خانواده‌های ماهان کشور دهقان کسی را پیدا نکرد که فریدون او را می‌پذیرد. به خاطر این شروع به رفتن به کشورهای همسایه کرد.

جندل رسید به دربار شاه یمن و شاه از او پرسید که چه پیغام داری. به او گفت جندل درود بر تو همیشه از تو دور باشد دست بدی. از ایران یکی کهترم، پیام آورده به شاه یمن. پس از این جندل به شاه خبر داد که فریدون می‌خواست دختران او را برگزیند برای پسران خود چون شاه هنوز به آنها نام نداده‌بود

پیام فرستاده‌ی پادشاه را شنید شاه یمن. درباریان خود را جمع کرد و گفت که اگر خواستگاری را بپذیرم این دروغ می‌شود چون نمی‌خواهم دختاران من را بدهم. از طرف دیگر ولی او می‌ترسید که اگر نه بگوید نبرد بین کشورها‌ی خود و فریدون شروع شود. به درباریان یادآوری کرد که فریدون ضحاک را نه تنها شکست داده‌بود بلکه او را در دماوند زنجیر کرد و ضحاک مثل آنها تازی بود. درباریان به شاه پاسخ دادند که ما تازیان هم جنگاور هستیم و از فریدون نمی‌ترسیم. اگر نمی‌خواهی دختران را بدهی به او یک مقداری پل مثل هدیه بفرست. و اگر نخواهی پل هم بدهی از فریدون درخواست عجیب بکن که او نتواند برآورده کند.

شاه حرف‌های طرفداران خود را نپذیرفت و فرستاده‌ی فریدون را دوباره پیش خواند. گفت که از پادشاه تو کهتر ام و حاضر ام دختاران من را به او بدهم با این شرط که فرزندان او به دربار من بیایند که بتوانم آنها را آزمایش کنم. جندل پاسخ را شنید و تخت شاه را بوسید.

فریدون سه پسرش را خواند و می‌خواست آنها را آماده کند که بتواند آنها را به شاه یمن بفرست. برای فرزندان خود پند خاص داشت. گفت که شما هر چه گویم ز من بشنوید اگر کار بندید خورم بوید. فریدون توضیح داد که شاه یمن سه دختر خود را خواهد آورد و قیافه‌شان یکسان هم خواهند بود. او گفت که شاه کوچکترین دختر را در جلو خواهد گذاشت و بزرگترین را در پشت. و بعد از شاهزاده‌ها خواهد پرسید که کدام کوچک، کدام بزرگ و کدام میان.

فرزندان پادشاه به یمن رفتند و از آزمایش شاه پیروز بیرون آمدند. اما نمی‌توانستند برگردند با زنان جدیدشان چون شاه هنوز کار دیگری داشت. وقتی که همه‌ی جشن تمام شد برای سه شاهزاده در گوشه‌ی باغ بساط خوابیدن حاضر کرد. شاه یمن که از غزا افسونگری بلد بود آمد و نیم شب یک باد سرمایی را به باغ زد که همه‌ی دشت و چمن یخ بزند.

اما اتفاق نیفتاد که باد جادویی به شاهزاده‌ان چیزی بکند چون مثل پدرشان آنها فره ایزدی داشتند. روز بعد شاه یمن آمد به باغ و فکر می‌کرد که آنها یخ زده‌باشند اما متعجب شد وقتی که دید که فرزندان فریدون هنوز زنده بودند. شاهزاده‌ان از این آزمایش هم پیروز بیرون آمدند و هیچ گزند به آنها نرسید. به این شکل با زنانشان به خاکشان برگردند. فریدون به استقبال پسران رفت اما می‌خواست دوباره آنها را آزمایش کند. به این دلیل او در پیش آنها به شکل اژدها پدیدار شد. اژدها اولا پسر بزرگترین را برگزید و آمایش کرد. پسر فکر کرد که آدم عقل با اژدها نمی‌جنگد و فرار کرد. برادر میان تیر زد به اژدها که در حقیقت پدرش بود. برادر کوچکترین گفت به اژدها از پیش ما باز بشو چون ما فرزند فریدون ایم.

فریدون پاسخ‌های پسران خود را شنید و روی تخت گرانمیگی برنشست. به فرزندان گفت که اژدهایی که می‌خواست جهان را بسوزد پدرتان بود و بعد از این آزمایش زمان رسیده‌بود که فریدون آنها را بنامد. گفت -


توئي مهترین سلم نام تو باد
به گیتی براگند کام تو باد
که جستی سلامتی ز کام نهنگ
بگاه گریزش نکردی درنگ


میانه که از آغاز تیری نمود
که از آتش مرا ورا دلیری فزود
او را تور خواهینم شیر دلیر
کجا زنده پیلش نیارد بزیر


دیگر کهتر آن مرد با سنگ و جنگ
که هم بشتاب است و بدرنگ
از خاک و از آتش میانه گزید
چنان که از راه هوشیاران سزید
دلیر و جوان و هوشیار بود
به گیتی جزا ورا نشاید ستود
اکنون ایرج اندرخور نام او
همه مهتری بود فرجام او

و هم به زنانشان اسم داد - زن سلم را کرد آرزو، زن تور آزاد و زن ایرج نیک پی را سهی. بعد از این اخترشناسی به پسران آمد و به آنها گفت که در طالع‌شان جنگ است و باید حاضر باشند.

Translation

Fereydun sat on the throne of greatness and his reign lasted five hundred years. His mother Faranak was not aware that Fereydun had become the pâdishâh of the world, finally the days of black magic came to an end. Fereydun was from the race of Pishdâdi but he became the pâdishâh of the whole world from China to Rum.

When he became fifty years old he had three sons, two from Shahrnâz and a smaller one from Arnavâz. He had not named his sons and one day he commanded his servant Jandal that he find three girls from fairy-faced parents. In addition to this, he had another condition that these girls not yet have names. Jandal found no one from the great houses of the country that Fereydun would accept. Because of this, he began to go to the neighbouring countries.

Jandal arrived at the court of the Shah of Yemen and the Shah asked him what message he had. To him said Jandal good health to you, may the hand of evil always remain far from you. I am a minor from Iran, a message carrier to the Shah of Yemen. Then Jandal informed the Shah that Fereydun wanted to choose his daughters for his own sons because the Shah had not named them yet.

The Shah of Yemen listened to the message carrier of the pâdishâh. He gathered his courtiers and said that if I accept this proposal this would be a lie because I do not want to give away my daughters. On the other hand though he was afraid that if he said no a fight would start between his own country and Fereydun’s. He reminded the courtiers that Fereydun not only had defeated Zahhak but also chained him in Damâvand and Zahhak like them was a Tâzi. The courtiers responded to the Shah that we are Tâzi and also warriors and we are not afraid of Fereydun. If you don’t want to give your daughters to him send him a quantity of money as a gift. And if you don’t want to even give money make strange requests from Fereydun that he cannot satisfy.

The Shah did not accept the words of his supporters and called forth again Fereydun’s messenger. He said that I am inferior to your pâdishâh and I am ready to give him my daughters with this condition that his sons come to my court that I may test them. Jandal heard the response and kissed the Shah’s throne.

Fereydun called his three sons and wanted to prepare them that he may send them to the Shah of Yemen. For his own sons he had special advice. He said that listen to everything from me if you close this task you will be joyous. Fereydun explained that the Shah of Yemen will bring his three daughters and they would all look the same. He said that the Shah will put his smallest daughter in the front and the biggest at the back and after he will ask the princes which is the smallest, which biggest and which the one in between.

The sons of the pâdishâh went to Yemen and emerged victorious from the Shah’s test. But they could not return with their new wives because the Shah still had another task. When all the festivities had finished for the three princes he made sleeping arrangements in the corner of the garden. The Shah of Yemen who from war knew magic came and at midnight launched a wind of cold at the garden so that everything freeze.

But it did not occur that the magical wind do anything to the princes because like their father they possessed the Farr-e Yazidi. The next day the Shah of Yemen to the garden and thought that they had been frozen but he was surprised when he saw that Fereydun’s sons were yet alive. The princes emerged victorious from this test also and no damage came to them. In this way they returned to their palace with their wives.

Fereydun went to welcome the sons but wanted again to test them. For this reason, he appeared as a dragon in front of them. The dragon first chose the eldest son and tested him. The boy thought that a wise man does not fight with a dragon and fled. The middle brother fired arrows from a distance at the dragon that was actually his father. The youngest brother said to the dragon begone from in front of us because we are the sons of Fereydun.

Fereydun heard the responses of his own sons and lounged on the throne of opulence. To the sons he said that the dragon that wanted to burn the world was your father and after this test the time had come that he name his sons. He said:

You the eldest let Salm be your name.
To the universe be the scent of your desire
That you leapt to safety from the jaws of the crocodile
In escaping him you did not pause


The middle one who from the beginning showed an arrow
Whose bravery grew from my fire
We shall call him Tur the brave lion
Where did he not bring down his live elephant


The smallest one of those men with jewel and battle
Who is both with acceleration and with pause
From his territory he chose the fire of the middle one
Thus he built from the path of the observant
Brave and young and vigilant was he
In the universe maybe there is one who does not praise him
Now Iraj Andarkhor is his name
His conclusion the greatest

And he also named their wives - Salm’s wife he made Ârzu, Tur’s wife Âzâd, and the wife of Iraj of good foundation Sahi. After this, an astrologer came to the sons and told them that in their future was a war and that they had to be ready.
