Ch. 1: अर्जुनविषादयोग — Arjunaviṣādayoga — The Yoga of Arjuna’s Dejection
- Verse 1.1
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after gathering on the holy field of Kurukshetra what did my sons and the sons of Pandu, desiring to fight, do?
- Verse 1.2
Sañjaya said: Having seen the army of the sons of Pandu arranged in formation, King Duryodhanaḥ then approaching his teacher spoke these words.
- Verse 1.3
O teacher, behold this great army of the sons of Pandu, arranged for battle by your intelligent disciple the son of Drupada.
- Verse 1.4
Here are heroes and great archers equal to Bhīma and Arjuna in battle, Yuyudhānaḥ, Virāṭa, and Drupadaḥ the mighty.
- Verse 1.5
There are also fighters like Dhṛṣṭaketuḥ, Cekitānaḥ, and heroic Kāśirāja. Purujit, Kuntibhojaḥ, and Śaibyaḥ the bull amongst men.
- Verse 1.6
Yudhāmanyuḥ the courageous, heroic Uttamaujāḥ, the son of Subhadrā and the sons of Draupadī all indeed great warriors.
- Verse 1.7
Those of ours who are distinguished, know them O twice born! The leaders of my army, I name them to you for your knowledge.
- Verse 1.8
There are yourself, Bhīṣmaḥ, Karṇaḥ, and Kṛpaḥ always victorious in battle and also certainly Aśvatthāmā, Vikarṇaḥ, and the son of Somadatta.

Many other heroes also willing to risk their lives for me, striking with many weapons and all skilled in battle.
- Verse 1.10
Unlimited is our strength protected by Bhīṣmā. Limited however is this strength of the Pāṇḍavās protected by Bhīmā.
- Verse 1.11
You, all situated in their positions, must indeed protect and support Bhīṣma.
